Be cautious of your eating habit to prevent diabetes- Lydia Agyen Frimpong

Founder of Frankel Foundation for Diabetics, Lydia Agyen Frimpong has urged Ghanaians to be cautions of their eating habits and exercise regularly to prevent diabetes, which she said was a dangerous disease.

According to her, diabetes is a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood.

She revealed to The Spectator, during a health walk and a screening exercise organised by her outfit at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra last Saturday, that the disease was endemic, but, many people did not take it serious

Mrs Frimpong said that her motivation for creating awareness about the disease stemmed from the fact that she and some family members are diabetic, and upon regular visits to the hospital, she realised that many people were oblivious of the disease, and lived without paying heed to its effect on them.

She said that there was the need for some level of awareness creation to enable people go to the hospitals for check-up.

“Though diabetes does not kill straight away, its complications could gradually lead to one’s death, and for that reason, those suffering from the disease should not allow it to take their lives,” she said.

To look healthy in spite of the disease, Mrs Frimpong advised diabetics to take their medications as prescribed by a medical doctor.

She disclosed that her outfit would organise a symposium at Korle-Bu Diabetes Centre on the dangers of the disease and later extend the education to the Ashanti and Central Regions.

Some participants expressed their appreciation to the Frankel Foundation for Diabetics for the free medical care given them and asked other Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to emulate Mrs Frimpong’s foundation.
