B-A libraries lack furniture

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-AgyemangopThe  management of the Brong Ahafo Regional Library Authority has appealed to non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and public spirited individuals to provide the library with furniture, especially tables and chairs, for effective running of the facility.

The regional librarian, Frederick Noble Baada, who made the appeal during an interview with The Ghanaian Times, said the management was unable to run the library effectively due to the lack of tables and chairs, as well as shelves to mount computers and books provided to the library.

He said 15 tables and chairs were needed urgently to mount computers donated to them to offer training to staff and the general public.

He explained that due to the situation, the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) and other institutions providing computers to the library had threatened to withdraw their supplies if the situation was not addressed.

Touching on other issues, he said the Volta River Authority (VRA), since May this year, had disconnected electricity supply to the library due to indebtedness, adding that it owed the VRA GH¢2,600 which was inherited from contractors working on the project.

He said as a result the public library was compelled to close at 5pm instead of 6pm, adding; “We would have wished to extend the time but had no choice because at that time, darkness begins to set in which makes it impossible for any reading to go on.

The Regional Librarian said efforts to resolve the issue by the VRA had not been successful at it insists on having the debt cleared before it could restore power to the facility.

Mr. Baada said the management at the moment was relying on 0.20 pesewa being charged on casual users, thus those who use the library without registering to run the place.
