Auditor General warns public officials about public funds misappropriation, misapplication

The Auditor-General, Mr Daniel Domelevo, has expressed anger about the wanton manner public officers misappropriate and misapplied public funds in the country.

He also expressed concern about the increasingly misapplication of public funds by public officers and called for something urgent to be done to halt it.

Mr Domelevo stated this in an interview with journalists here yesterday in Tamale on the sideline of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting yesterday.

The sitting was meant to look into the 2016 Audited Accounts of tertiary institutions and district assemblies.

The Auditor General noted that some heads of public institutions were recklessly misusing public funds without due regards to the public financial guidelines.

Mr Domelevo wondered whether such officials would run their private businesses the way and manner they were running the state offices.

He hinted that soon public officers would be surcharged for violating the public financial regulations.

The Auditor General called on the general public to help fight against misappropriation of public funds in the country.

He further suggestion that laws be enacted to empower citizens to assist in retrieval of public funds from corrupt officials.

Mr Domelevo advised public officers to always comply with the laws of the country to ensure accountability.

He emphasised that complying with public financial guidelines and regulations would prevent financial malfeasance and other improprieties.

The chairman of the PAC, Mr James Klutsey Avedzi, said, it was sad that some heads of public institutions kept on repeating same infractions.

He warned that the committee would not hesitate to recommend punitive actions against public officers who misappropriated public funds.
