Executives of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) yesterday signed a performance contract with its supervising agency, the State Enterprises Commission (SEC).

The contract, among other things, was to ensure SOEs were run efficiently to be able to provide much needed services for the citizenry as well as complement the efforts of the private sector to build the national economy.

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Chief of Staff, Frema Opare, Minister for Monitoring and Evaluation, Dr Anthony Akoto Osei, Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyeremanten, Deputy Minister of Finance, Kwaku Kwarteng, Deputy Minister of Energy, Owuraku Aidoo were some of the dignitaries in attendance at the ceremony, held in Accra.

Out of the 39 SOEs, 24 including the New Times Corporation, Graphic Communications Group Limited, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Ghana Water Company Limited, Ghana Cocoa Board, Tema Oil Refinery, Volta River Authority, GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Ghana Highway Authority, Inter-City State Transport Company Limited, among others were involved in the ceremony.

Addressing the function, Dr Bawumia said the government would hold all executives of SOEs accountable to the terms of the contract, adding that the operation of SOEs would be highly scrutinised to ensure efficient use of scarce resources.

He urged them to be innovative and transparent in their workings to support government’s industrialisation plan.

Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Executive Chairman, SEC, said the Commission was restructuring to be able to effectively monitor SOEs and help in its realignment to maximise revenue for government to undertake development.
