Asukawkaw Forest Reserve Plunderer Arrested

Twum Barima, popularly known as “Carpey”, 42, said to be a notorious illegal chainsaw operator plundering the Asukawkaw ForestReserve in the Mpraeso area, has been arrested.

The suspect was arrested on August 19, and his KIA cargo truck loaded with 99 beams of mahogany and sapele timber species impounded.

According to Mr. Robert Deri, Mpraeso District Manager of the Forest Services Division (FSD), illegal chainsaw operations had been going on in the reserve for sometime now with investigations revealing that the suspect was the brain behind these acts.

In a bid to clamp down on the illegal activities, a timber monitoring team was tasked to undertake an intensive monitoring of timber operations in the reserve.

He said, the team, during its routine monitoring exercise, on August 18 had a tip-off that the suspect and others had sneaked into the reserve in the night to engage in illegal timber operations.

The team, he said, set in motion a security mechanism which trapped the suspect at about 3 a.m. the next day, driving out of the reserve in his cargo truck with registration number GT 752 V, loaded with beams.

He was escorted, together with the truck and its cargo, to the Nkawkaw Police Station and handed over to the police for further investigations, after which he was arraigned before the Mpraeso Circuit Court, which granted him bail to appear again tomorrow.
