The Chairman of the Sand Winners Association at Awutu Breku in the Central Region, Fred Kutorke has cautioned against indiscriminate sand winning in the area.
He warned that anyone caught engaging in illegal sand winning would be dealt with.
Addressing members of the association at the weekend, on the need to protect the environment, Mr. Kutorke said that he was unhappy with those who abandoned their areas of operations without reclaiming the land which later became death traps to both humans and domestic animals.
“We cannot continue to engage in acts that pose danger to our fellow human beings when we win the sand and either fail or refuse to cover the pits.
“It is about time we amended our ways and resorted to land reclamation for our brothers and sisters who are farmers to use, “he stated.
Mr. Kutorke further advised the tipper truck drivers who carted sand and gravels along the road to always cover their trucks to prevent the windscreens of other vehicles’ from getting damaged as well as causing nuisance on the roads.
“I am humbly appealing to all the tipper truck drivers who do not belong to an association to join the existing ones to enable us pay our taxes, since the government needs revenue to develop the country,” he said.
The Chairman called on members of the association to abide by the laws of the Minerals Commission which governed their operations.
