Assembly members and unit committees aspiring to contest the forthcoming district level elections have been admonished to manage themselves properly in order to run decent campaigns devoid of insults, threats, wrangling and acrimony.
They have also been asked to continue to show dedication, determination and commitment to duty to benefit the assemblies and communities in diverse ways so as to accelerate growth and development and improve livelihoods.
An appeal was made to them to continue to cooperate with traditional authorities and opinion leaders to oversee the electoral areas until the new assemblies and unit committees are constituted to avoid stalling programmes and activities to ameliorate the plight of the people.
Elijah Adansi-Bonah, the Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi Municipal Assembly, made the admonition at the final General Assembly meeting of the Sixth Assembly held at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
The meeting was in response to a directive issued by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) for all metropolitan municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to be dissolved by Monday, October 7th, 2019.
“I advised assembly members and unit committee members aspiring to contest the forthcoming district assembly elections to manage themselves well and run decent campaigns devoid of insults, wrangling, acrimony and threats, I congratulate and praise you for your hard work, team work, dedication, determination and commitment since your elections in September, 2015 which has benefitted our assemblies in diverse ways,” Mr Adansi-Bonah said.
Nana Bondah-Obeng, the Presiding Member of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, appealed to assembly and unit committee members to continue to collaborate with traditional leaders to oversee activities of their electoral areas before a new assembly was reconstituted.
Buttressing a point, he quoted Act 246 of 1992 Constitution, Act 936 Section 6 (1) of Local Governance Act, 2016 which stipulated term for District Assemblies, Act 244(3) of 1992 Constitution, Section 10 of standing orders of MMDAs and Act 936,Section 17 of the Local Governance Act offered presiding members authority to dissolve assemblies at end of meetings.
“The electorate should recognise your good works and contributions and reward you accordingly by giving you another mandate to represent them on December 17, 2019 with the hope that the next assembly will emulate enviable qualities and standards set by the assemblies,” Nana Bondah-Obeng assured. -citinewsroom.com
