Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is investigating the circumstances leading to the killing of an illegal miner at Wawase, in the Ashanti region last Sunday, during a clash between illegal miners and the national anti-galamsey joint military-police task force.

Simon Osei-Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, at an emergency meeting of REGSEC on Tuesday, said the investigation is to ascertain the truth about the clash and the death of the illegal miner, so that the security council could manage tension between the mining and the task force.

While the illegal miners claimed they were not armed and that the deceased was shot as he was entering the compound of an old woman, the task force said the illegal miners fired at the team.

The Minister urged for calm, and urged the miners to avoid confronting the task force to avert further clashes.

The caution, he said, was based on information gathered by the REGSEC that the illegal miners had the intention to stand up against the task force, following the killing of the illegal miner, last Sunday.

One person was killed and 80 others were arrested in an alleged violent clash between the joint task force and illegal miniers, popularly known as galamseyers, at Wawasi, a galamsey community in Obuasi.

The 80 illegal miners were arrested at separate mining locations by the task force, while a number of heavy duty equipment had been destroyed.
