Armwrestling training course for coaches, referees

Eagle Extra Stout (EES), in collaboration with the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), will organise a four-day training course for arm wrestling coaches and referees.

The training course is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, to Sunday, March 10, at the Media Centre of the Accra Sports Stadium.

Participants for the training course have been selected from 10 regions in the country and would also include all the various security services in the country.

Resource Person for the training programme is Mr Nasr Youssef from Cairo, Egypt.

Mr Nasr Youssef is the head referee and technical director of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), as well as a member of the World Armwrestling Referees panel and a researcher in the field of physical training.

In a related development, the EES and GAF would in the coming days announce the Eagle Extra Stout Armwrestling Challenge, which would see the sport promoted in selected cities across the country.

Season One of the ESS Challenge would tour Tarkwa, Koforidua, Kumasi and Bolgatanga while Season Two would also hit Ho, Cape Coast, Tamale and Accra to determine the ESS National Champion.

It would be recalled that the ESS Challenge begun at the Sunyani Technical University and after a successful event, management agreed to replicate the event across the country.

Armwrestling, the fastest growing sport and the most talk about apart from football is expanding into the regions.

The sport in two years has won 100 continental medals for Ghana. –GNA

C’ttee charged to return XI Wise to elite football

Nana Kobina Nketsiah V, Omanhene of Essikado (British Sekondi) and Life Chief Patron of Sekondi XI Wise FC has charged the club`s nine-member centenary celebration planning committee to work to ensure the club’s return to Ghana`s elite soccer.

Inaugurating the committee that has Ambassador Joseph C. Ackon as chairman, Nana Nketsiah brought to the fore the significance and importance of unity in any enterprise.

According to a statement issued by Mr Victor Markin, Member/Secretary to the Planning Committee, the Life Patron mentioned some of the club’s achievements, history and highlights since its formation on April 9, 1919 and appealed for cool heads among the management, technical team, players and supporters, anytime the club seemed to be underperforming.

“Brainstorming, peaceful engagements, and allowing for broader passionate discussion across board will ensure lasting solutions to problems,” he said.

He told the Committee, which also had a three-year mandate, to progressively ensure that the club returned to Ghana’s premiership within the period of its stewardship.

“Again, the committee should help in the restructuring of the club, rebrand it to make it more attractive to investors, old and new supporters, scout for talents in the Junior and Senior High Schools and establish all the age group teams in Ghana such as Under 15, 17, 19, 21.”

This, Nana Kobina Nketsiah V said, should be vigorously pursued to serve as the resource base for the club, publication of the club’s history, assemble every piece of information available towards the setting up of a very reliable data base for the club.

Responding, Ambassador Ackon, stated that he has visited players and the technical team of the club at their training grounds in Sekondi and assured the team of his dedicated loyalty to the club and appealed for seriousness, commitment and discipline from the players, during training sessions, friendly matches, and competitive matches as well as off the pitch.

He presented to the team, crates of eggs, cartons of milk, milo and an undisclosed amount of money, describing the package as purposely for their breakfast and was received by the club’s Head Coach, Thomas Ampomah, an old player of the club.

He expressed gratitude to Ambassador Ackon and assured him that, his first meeting with the players, was a significant gesture that had boosted the morale and spirit of the entire playing body as they approached the rebuilding exercise of the team with zeal and passion. –GNA

Lokko: Bronx Boxing Gym will produce more world champions

Lawrence Carl Lokko, former coach of Richard Commey, the current International Boxing Federation (IBF) world champion, has said, the Bronx Gym at Akoto Lante in Accra, will produce more champions for Ghana in the near future.

Commey was a product of the gym under the tutelage of Coach Lokko before he switched camp last year.

Coach Carl Lokko in an interview with the media said the gym which was founded in 2004, has been through difficult times, catering and encouraging boxers to train to become future champions for Ghana and Africa.

According to Coach Lokko, his gym was noted for high level of discipline and commitment adding that, his wards have been given the best of training in and out of the ring.

Coach Lokko, who is the Deputy Technical Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) said, boxing was business and a sport that needs a lot of investment and support of all kinds, adding that, boxers need good and nutritious meals, good physical conditioning, good sleeping environment, good education, good management and skills to develop well.

“I am very proud of him (Richard Commey) and what God has done for him. As one of the coaches to have worked with the new world champion, I am motivated the more to focus on raising new champions for Ghana. I get the impression we are doing something good here,” he added.

“I have never regretted anything in life, because that is how the Almighty has programmed the world and I believe another world champion would emerge from the Bronx Gym,” he said.
