Armed robber killed over gold ore

AN alleged armed robber was on Easter Monday killed, when he and three other accomplices attacked some farmers in a bush at Wassa Nanako, on the Wassa Akropong-Ayanfuri road in the Western Region, over gold ore.

The gang of four allegedly laid ambush and attacked three farmers who were carrying some black concentrates to town for refining, when one of them (robbers) was shot dead while the others fled.

The deceased has been deposited at the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital awaiting autopsy.

Meanwhile, the police, who have mounted a search for the rest of the suspects, have appealed to the Wassa Amenfi community to volunteer information to facilitate their investigations.

The black concentrate, The Ghanaian Times gathered, is a rich part of the gold ore collected at the mine sites to which some chemicals are added to get the refined gold. This business has attracted frequent attacks from armed men, who lay ambush and attack the gold diggers, while on their way home.

“We have still not been able to identify the three other accomplices who are on the run and the deceased, but we have intensified our investigations into the matter.” the Wassa Akropong Police Commander, ASP Isaac Kumnipah told The Ghanaian Times yesterday.

Giving the background, he said, at about 7.30 p.m. on April 6, KwabenaAgbanyo, a 36-year-old cocoa farmer from Domeabra, who works at   Wassa Nanako, reported to the police at Wassa Akropong that at about 5.30 pm that day, he and two colleagues were returning from Nanako mining site to their residence with some black concentrates, when on reaching a section of the road, four people armed with a single barreled shotgun, attacked them.

During the scuffle, one of the armed robbers fired at Abganyo, who was carrying the black concentrates, but missed him.

ASP Kumnipah said the bullet instead hit the ribs of an armed robber killing him instantly, while the others fled the scene.

“A search on the deceased revealed two live AA cartridges in his pocket, a single-barrelled shot-gun and an empty cartridge concealed in the chamber.” he said.

The body according to him was later conveyed to the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital mortuary.

“We are still investigating the matter,” ASP Kumnipah added.
