Armed gang shoots policeman on patrol at Ho

A POLICEMAN was shot in the head at the spot near the C. K. Road Junction at Ho in the early hours of yesterday, the latest incident in the uncontrollable trend of armed robberies in the municipality.

Constable Eric Osei Nyarko, who bled profusely from the shot, was rushed to the Regional Hospital at Ho, where he is said to be in a stable condition and responding to treatment.

Confirming the story, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACOP) W. A. K. Akpesey, told The Ghanaian Times at Ho, yesterday that the officer was a member of the night patrol team, responding to a robbery attack in the area when he was shot.

“The shot came from a sniper’s gun so the police did not see the assailant, and for that matter did not return fire”, he said.

According to Mr. Akpesey, the incident coincided with a severe rainstorm which hit the municipality in the night, keeping most residents indoors.

He said that no arrest had been made yet, and that investigations were underway.

The shooting of Constable Nyarko is the fifth reported armed robbery attack in Ho in less than a week.

It also comes less than 24 hours after The Ghanaian Times expressed concern in an editorial, over the worsening security situation in Ho and called on the Regional Security Council to adopt new strategies to restore sanity in the regional capital.

At the time of filing this report, the chiefs of Ho were set for a crisis meeting over the unending incidence of armed robberies in the municipality, and to adopt strategies to deal with the menace.
