An evening in honour of prof Martin Owusu



The Board of Governors of Ɔsagyefo Kwame Nkrumah African Genius Awards, will tomorrow, organ – ise an evening in honour of Professor Martin Owusu, first recipient of the African Genius Award for Drama. The event takes place from 4.30pm through 7pm, at the Methodist University College, Dansoman, where he currently lectures. Highlights of the evening will include excerpts from two of his most celebrated plays.

He will then make himself available for a conversation with the audience in the form of a Q&A and testimonies. The Guest of Honour would be Madam Justice Sophia Akuffo, Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Other personal- ities expected are the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Most Rev. Titus Awotwe Pratt, the Principal of the Methodist University College, Professor Agyepong.

Also invited are faculty and students of the School of Per- forming Arts, University of Ghana and the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) where Prof. Owusu once lectured, members of the Ghana Union of Theatre Societies, the Ghana Actors Guild and the Ghana Culture Forum.

Professor Martin Owusu,playwright, actor, director and theatre scholar, was among 17 other Ghanaian geniuses awarded with the African Genius Award in 2014, in recognition of the impact of their works in Arts and Science, Technology and Innovation, some of which had become national references.

Some of the recipients were Dr. Ave Kludze, first African to command a spacecraft in orbit; Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, first African to perform open heart surgery, Alhaji Ibrahim, a renowned smock weaver from Tamale; Dr. Nii Narku Quaynor, considered the Father of ICT in Africa; and Rev. Dr. Chris Hesse, the revered cin- ematographer.

The Ɔsagyefo African Ge- nius Awards ceremony is a biennial event. In between the award years, the board has instituted a quar- terly series to enable honourees to share their thoughts with the rest of the world. The first of these lectures took place at the British Council in November 2015, featuring Mrs. Kate Quartey Papafio, Chief Executive Officer of Reroy Group, who received the award for Entrepreneurship for successfully turning around her company from being an importer of electrical cables and conduc- tors to a net exporter of these products.
