The meat popularly known as “wele” was being prepared on the refuse dump near the Mallam Market, when the taskforce from the Accra Metro Public Health Department arrived at the market unannounced

On seeing the arrival of the taskforce, the butchers and the buyers took to their heels thus making it difficult for the taskforce to arrest any of them.

Speaking to The Ghanaian Times, the Director of the Accra Metro Public Health Department, Dr. Simpson Anim Boateng, said the move was to rid the markets in the country of unwholesome meat prepared under unhygienic conditions, noting that the cholera outbreak in the country could be attributed such food items being sold in the markets.

He asked food vendors and slaughter houses to prepare and sell their products under hygienic conditions or face the wrath of the assembly.

“This is not the only action we are taking against unscrupulous persons who sell food under unhygienic conditions. We have a series of actions we will be taking against these people to ensure sanity in Accra”, he said.

He advised the public against food items prepared under unhygienic conditions.

“Let’s take our health issues seriously by not buying food and meat from vendors and market women who are not hygienic”, he said.
