Alima Mahama directs dissolution of MMDAs Oct 7

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has directed that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country as well as their unit committees should be dissolved by Monday, October 7.

This is to pave way for the conduct of the upcoming district level elections. A circular emanated from the ministry further instructed all regional ministers to comply by the directive.

According to the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, the directive, however, excluded the Nkoranza South Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region as well as the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region.

“This is because the tenure of the assembly members and their unit committees, who were elected into office and inaugurated on Tuesday, October 5, 2015, ends on Saturday October 5, 2019, in line with Article 2461(i) of the 1992 Constitution.

“However, since October 5, is a Saturday, the MMDAs stand dissolved on Monday, October 7, 2019, and the district level elections, which is expected to come off on December 17, 2019, is to elect new assembly and unit committee members to constitute the successor MMDAs.

“The MMDCEs have been tasked to take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the executive and administrative functions of their respective assemblies in line with Article 243(2) B of the 1992 Constitution,” Hajia Mahama noted. -myjoyonline.com
