Akyem Swedru chieftaincy dispute: One dead, several wounded

One person was reportedly shot dead, and several others sustained wounds in a violent chieftaincy clash at Akyem-Swedru, in the Eastern Region yesterday.

The palace of the chief, Okow-twaresuo Kantamanto Owarae Agyekum III, was also set ablaze by a group of irate youth who are challenging his legitimacy.

So far sixteen persons have been arrested in the clash which erupted during the Akwasidae celebration in the town.

Those arrested included those who pelted stones at the police and smashed the windscreens of two police vehicles.

Chief Superintendent James Sarfo Preprah, Oda Divisional Police Commander, told The Ghanaian Times that the deceased, Kwasi Nyame, 55, died while being rushed to the Oda Government Hospital.

He said a misunderstanding between the chief and the queenmother over the performance of some rituals, sparked the confusion which led to the clash between the supporters of the two factions.

He explained that the chief performed rituals at the palace to signify the Akwasidae Festival, after which he proceeded to the queenmother’s palace to perform similar rituals in the company of some elders.

On arrival at the entrance of the queenmother’s palace, he realised that the queenmother and some elders were about doing same.

However, due to an alleged cold war between the omanhene’s faction and that of the queenmother, confusion erupted when an “Odifour”, upon seeing the omanhene and his faction, shouted in a megaphone that thieves had attacked the palace, leading to the clash between the factions.
