AfDB: Ghana has not been sanctioned

dr_bawumia1The African Development Bank (AfDB) has denied the allegation that it has listed Ghana among countries sanctioned for non-payment of debts.

It follows assertions by the New Patriotic Party’s Vice Presidential candidate Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, that Ghana has been sanctioned by the AfDB over non-payment of its debt.

Speaking at the Distinguished Speaker Series of the Central University College last Tuesday at the on the topic: ‘IMF Bailout, Will the Anchor Hold?’ Dr. Bawumia disclosed that the sanctions took effect January this year (2015).

According to the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, the countries on the AfDB’s restricted list included Somalia, Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Djibouti.

But the Bank in a press statement signed by its Director of Communication, Joel Kibaza, copied the Ghanaian Times in Accra on Wednesday, stated, “Ghana is currently on all obligations with the AfDB”.

The statement noted that “on 18 February, due to administrative oversight, Ghana was erroneously included in the list of countries under sanction by the AfDB”.

It added that the error was detected that same day and a corrected list immediately issued in its replacement.
