Adopt Robust Research To Boost Agric — Expert urges government

farmingMr. Roger Johnson, President of the National Farmers Union of the United States of America (USA), has said Ghana has enormous potentials to significantly reduce the importa-tion of farm produce such as maize and other crops, if proper re-search is conducted on the country’s agriculture sector.

He therefore, stressed the need for a robust agriculture research to increase the country’s agriculture yields and boost the economy.

Mr. Johnson who said this during a media interaction in Accra after his one week visit to the country noted that it was only through research that new crops and methodologies could be developed to boost agriculture production in the country.

He urged the government to financially support all the agriculture research institutions to enable them to conduct more researches into new farming practices which would be useful to farmers.

Mr. Johnson maintained that Ghana had a youthful population, unlike the USA, which could be exploited as a tool to boost the nation’s agriculture industry.

He urged the government to create the enabling environment to attract youth into agriculture to reduce unemployment.

Mr. Johnson charged Ghanaian farmers to form strong co-operatives to fight for their welfare, stressing that, they must also seek assistance from experts to aid them in their farming activities.

He said his visit to Ghana to participate in this year’s Food and Agriculture Show (FAGRO) held in Kumasi last week had been mutually beneficial to both farmers in Ghana and in the USA and called for more collaboration and coordination between the two countries.
