Accra to host Millennium Marathon

Alfred-oko-VanderpuijeAccra will host the 2015 edition of the Millennium Marathon on September 6.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije announced this at a press briefing on Friday. He said the decision to settle on the Ghanaian capital was reached by the organisers of the marathon after meeting the criteria.

Dr. Oko Vanderpuije declared the city’s readiness to host the contest expected to attract over 15,000 athletes when a delegation led by the Ethiopian Ambassador called on him and announced plans to award the hosting right to Ghana.

Scheduled to be launched on March 10, the event would be sponsored by Millennium Marathon Sports Limited, Ethiopia, with support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ethiopian Embassy in Accra.

The 21 kilometer marathon, Mr. Vanderpuije said would contribute to Ghana’s economy in the areas of tourism, trade and investment whiles offering Ghanaian athletes a fertile grounds to develop their careers.

The race would start from the Independence Square and move through the La Beach area, Burma Camp, National Theatre, Ridge, Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and back to the Independence Square.

He urged Ghanaians to participate in the event by lining up the streets to cheer the athletes while exhibiting the rich heritage and hospitality of Ghanaians.
