Accra Mayor Welcomes Children To School

MayorThe Mayor of Accra, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije yesterday visited some public basic schools in Accra to welcome newly enrolled children, as part of the annual “My First Day At School” celebration.

The event is to ensure that the children find their first day at school enjoyable and be encouraged to remain in school.

As part of his rounds, the Mayor, who also inspected facilities at the schools, distributed gifts, including learning kits to the kindergarten children.

Places visited included the Nii Odartey Lamptey Basic School near the Baiden Powell Memorial Hall, the Abadraka Gray Kindergarten School, Chorkor KG/ Mamprobi Site 4 School in Ablekuma South and the Da Awatul Islamic School.

In his remarks, the Mayor, who was accompanied by the Presiding Member of the AMA, Desmond Addo Biney, urged the heads of the schools to ensure hygienic conditions in the schools to safeguard the children from contracting diseases, particularly cholera.

He asked them to monitor the quality of food items sold by vendors within the school premises in order to protect the children.

Dr. Vanderpuije announced that for this academic year, the Assembly would feed about 55,000 children in the present academic year under the school feeding programme.
