Accra bound Tema train derails at Santana

Three persons yesterday sustained various degrees of injury after an Accra bound train from Tema derailed at Santana near Tesano in Accra.

The victims were rushed to the Achimota Hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses told the Ghanaian Times reporter, who arrived at the scene of the accident around 8:30am that the accident occurred at exactly 7:40am.

Scores of people were gathered at the scene to catch a glimpse of the scene.

Kwame Oppong, an eyewitness, told the Ghanaian Times that, he joined residents of the area to help rescue occupants of the train, adding that only three persons were sent to the hospital, and several others sustained minor injuries.

He blamed the accident on the poor nature of the rails, saying the rail lines have not seen any major repairs for years now.

Another eyewitness, Yaw Oduro Baah, said “these rail tracks have become a death trap now. Passengers are no longer safe because some of the trains are even not in good shape. We must not wait till people start dying before we begin to take drastic measures about delicate issues”.

The Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Tesano Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Francis Aboagye, said the police responded swiftly after receiving a distress call, adding that the cause of the accident was not yet known.

He cautioned residents to desist from engaging in business activities along the rail lines, which according to him could endanger lives.

“Imagine there was someone selling or sitting at the very place this train fell, it could have been worst so I entreat the public to be very careful around the rail lines for their safety sake,” ASP Aboagye advised.

He asked residents and Ghanaians in general b e calm, saying the situation was under control.
