The Ablekuma West constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth wing has undertaken a clean-up exercise in the constituency as part of efforts to keep the area clean and instil the habit of good sanitation practices among the citizenry,

The exercise, led by the Constituency Youth Organiser, Jonathan Nii Lomo was well patronised by market women, members of the municipal assembly, shop owners, workers and other residents.

It was part of measures instituted by the youth wing to help in realisation of the vision of the President to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by the end of 2020.

It was also to ensure that the environment was clean, encourage good sanitation and hygienic behaviours and attitudes among residents of the constituency.

Choked gutters around the Dansoman settlements, streets, lorry stations, residential compounds and the entire Gbebu electoral area were all cleaned up during the exercise.

Speaking to the media after the three-hour exercise, Mr Lomo explained that the exercise was in line with government’s vision of ensuring safe environment and adoption of good sanitation practices.

He said it was also an indication the party was focused on promoting environmental health and sanitation issues and committed to meeting sanitation needs of residents to consolidate efforts towards making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

Bright Puni, the constituency chairman, observed that a clean environment had the potential to prevent diseases such as cholera, malaria, typhoid among others and called for collective efforts from residents in the constituency in keeping a clean environment.

Phillip Gyimah, Deputy Youth Organiser, called for an end to indiscriminate disposal of waste in the constituency and asked them to have attitudinal change towards waste management.

He disclosed that the party’s youth wing is collaborating with the assembly to organise periodic sanitation education and clean up exercises in the constituency towards sustainable healthy environs.
