Abesim residents try luck on accident vehicles numbers

Some residents of Abesim, near Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region, tried their luck on registration numbers of two vehicles involved in an accident, as they used them as lotto numbers.

The horrific crash occurred on Saturday afternoon, involving an Opel Astra taxi-cab and Toyota Camry, resulting in the death of one person, and injuring others.

Some members of Abesim, who rushed to the accident scene, instead of assisting the victims, rather busily searched for the registration numbers of the two vehicles, which had crashed head-on, to stake the national lottery.

Reports also gathered by The Ghanaian Times indicated that drivers plying that stretch of the road refused to stop to convey the accident victims to the hospital as several attempts for them to lend support failed.

The accident caused heavy traffic jam for a while before personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and police arrived at the scene to clear the road for commuters.

The driver of the Opel Astra taxi–cab with registration number GR 5921-U loaded with crates of tomato, travelling from Yamfo in the Tano North District  to Sunyani, died instantly, while other persons on board were in critical condition at the Regional Hospital in Sunyani.

Superintendent Stella Sedame, Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander confirmed the accident.

He told journalist that the driver of the Toyota Camry with registration number BA 393-16 lost control of the steering wheel and veered onto the lane of the oncoming taxi-cab at a narrow curve at Abesim, resulting in the accident.

Sup. Segame said the driver, Charles Yeboah, who was on an errand for a bridegroom during a wedding ceremony at Abesim, and four others  on board the vehicle, sustained injuries and were rush to the hospital while the body of Osman Sumaila, 28, was deposited at the same facility.

AS at the time of our visit around 1pm, personnel of the GNFS and the Ambulance Service were at the scene assisting the accident victims.
