9 church members perish in accident

The mangled vehicleNine people were reported killed when the commercial bus on which they were travelling, ran into a broken-down truck at Fomena in the Adansi District of the Ashanti Region, in the early hours of Saturday.

The Fomena District Police Commander, Superintendent Richard Anaba, who confirmed the death toll, said all the deceased were members of a church, Moment of Glory Prayer Army (MOGPA), who were returning from a church event at Abrankese along the lake Bosomtwi road.

They consist of four males and five females, including a child.

Supt. Anaba said the incident occurred at about 11:45 a.m. on the Kusa scarp at Fomena, when the Hyundai bus, and a Sprinter bus, tried to avoid running into the broken down cocoa truck.

The police said the broken down truck had been parked by the road side while the two vehicles, a Sprinter and a Hyundai, carrying the church members were descending the hill.

Supt Anaba said the Sprinter bus was heading toward Cape Coast while the Hyundai was moving towards Edubiase, and as they tried to descend the hill, the Sprinter bus stopped for an oncoming vehicle to climb.

In the process, the Hyundai overtook the Sprinter bus and rammed into the truck, resulting in the Sprinter also veering off the road.
