8 perish as 2 taxis collide

Eight people died in an accident involving two taxi-cabs at Kanfehiyilli, on the Tamale-Kumbugu road, in the early hours of Saturday.

One of the taxis, with registration number GE7496Y, using liquefied petroleum gas, with eight passengers on board, went up in flames trapping the passengers resulting in the death of seven of them, including the cabbie, a nursing mother and her baby.

It took personnel of the Fire Service about six hours to bring the fire under control and cut through the vehicle to remove the trapped bodies.

The driver of the other taxi cab with registration number GR 4860 U, died on the spot, while the four occupants of the vehicle who sustained various degrees of injuries, were rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

An eyewitness said the taxis were overspeeding, a practice he said, was a commonplace on the dusty road currently under construction.
