7 Hearts of Oak fans arrested in Kumasi

Seven supporters of Accra Hearts of Oak have been arrested and are been processed for court after damaging state property during the friendly encounter between Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, at the Baba Yara stadium Sunday.

The Ashanti Regional Police Crime Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Peter Baba, who confirmed the arrest to the Ghanaian Times, yesterday, said the suspects have been charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit crime, causing damage and assault.

Police would not give their names as they (supporters) were giving their statements as of the time of filing this report.

The supporters, who were arrested on Sunday during the second leg of the ‘Super 2 Clash’ friendly encounter, were among a section of supporters who ripped off seats and threw them onto the running tracks of the stadium in protest against the referee’s decision to ignore a penalty appeal.

It took the intervention of military personnel to ensure sanity as some of the supporters managed to flee the scene.

Kotoko lifted the cup at stake with a 4-0 aggregate, having humbled Hearts 2-0 in the initial leg at the Baba Yara stadium.

Kotoko also walked home with Gh¢10, 000. 00 from the headline sponsor of the competition, Taabea bitters.
