Fifty teachers and tutors of basic, secondary and tertiary educational institutions in the Berekum Municipality in the Brong-Ahafo Region, have been honoured for their dedicated and meritorious services.
The selection of the awardees was done through a free, fair and transparent voting process, organised and supervised by the local Bombisco Multimedia Organisation, a Ghanaian media and human resource development company, under the auspices of the Berekum Municipal Assembly and Education Directorate.
The award committee focused, particularly, on teachers whose pupils and students excelled creditably in their final examinations during the 2013/14 academic year.
Speaking at a durbar organised by the Bombisco Multimedia at the Berekum Golden City Park to mark the occasion, Madam Elizabeth Oti-Akenten, Berekum Municipal Director of Education, hailed the awardees for not only showing commitment to teaching, but also exhibiting a high sense of intuition and affection towards the welfare of pupils and students.
Madam Oti-Akenten, however, expressed concern about the way some teachers were attacked and assaulted by some parents and guardians in the municipality, in the teachers’ attempt to correct and discipline children.
She pointed out that that was a disincentive to quality teaching and learning, and therefore appealed to parents and guardians to approach school authorities to settle matters peacefully, for the academic interest of their children and wards.
Mr. Isaac Asare, Chief Executive Officer of Bombisco, said the award was instituted, basically, to establish and forge healthy interactive relationship between teachers, pupils and students, to serve as a stimulus to improve educational standards in the Municipality.
