50 landguards arrested within one month

arrest50 landguards have been arrested within a month at five locations in the Greater Accra Region.

The locations are, Adenta, Weija, Amasaman, Airport and Baatsona.

Specific areas where these landguards operated included, Ngleshie Amanfrom, Ofankor-Obimpe, Ashiyie, Quartey Papafio, Adjen Kotoku, Oyarifa, Ashalaja, Mayera, Tuba, East Airport and Ayimensah.

Twenty-one out of the 50 have been remanded, 20 on court bail and nine on police enquiry bail.

Briefing the media, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCOP George Alex Mensah said a combined team of Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) and counter terrorism units were mobilised to swiftly respond to landguard related activities.

This, according to him, formed part of the command’s measures to clamp down on landguard activities, stating that, “a team of crack investigators have been mobilised to ensure that such cases are properly investigated and sent to court without delay”.

DCOP Mensah said the command would continue to remain focus in the fight against landguards who would not allow citizens to carry out their daily activities in a peaceful manner.

He said through the operations, the police impounded and retrieve a Toyota Corolla, military uniforms and some accoutrements, a pickup vehicle, pump action gun, machetes, jack knives, live and empty cartridges and motorcycles.

He said lack of credible information remained a challenge in the fight against land guards, and called on the public for reliable information that would aid in nipping the menace in the bud.
