50 criminals arrested during yuletide

A total of 50 suspected criminals were arrested by the police in various parts of the country during the Christmas festivities.

The suspects who were arrested between December 24 and December 31 last year were involved in break-in, stealing, fake currency, robberies, car snatching, attack on mobile money transfer operators, narcotics and engaging in commercial sex activities.

They were arrested at areas such as Ashiaman, Tema, Airport, Bolgatanga, Kasoa, Adentan and Abokobi.

The Director-General of the Ghana Police Service, Public Affairs Department, Assistant Commission of Police (ACP) David Senanu Eklu disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

He said some of the suspects are on police enquiry bail and others in custody awaiting trial at the courts.

The Director-General said before the yuletide the police launched a crime prevention strategy which focused on areas such as the highways, residential areas, entertainment spots, business centres, markets, ceremonial areas and important installations.

He said in all 16,000 personnel were deployed across the country to ensure law and order, describing the operations as successful.

ACP Eklu said the Police Service has added 20 active emergency lines across the regions, adding that “Kumasi and Tamale emergency lines will soon be activated to help during emergencies”.

He said this year the Police Service would be more active with public engagements.

“The police will be visible, proactive and transparent in crime management in their operations to ensure crime-free society to enable people go about their duties without fear and panic,” ACP Eklu said.

He called on the public to partner the Police in crime prevention in the country by providing information, and also advised them to be security conscious at all times to help curb crime.
