5 suspected armed robbers arrested

Five out of seven suspected robbers who stormed a small-scale mining site at Ahwereso, at Nkawie in Ashanti, have been arrested, by the police in collaboration with the youth of the area.

Two AK 47 assault rifles were retrieved from them but two persons believed to include the leader, managed to escape with the gold concentrate they collected from the mining site.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Asare, Nkawie District Police Commander confirmed the arrest amid praises to the youth of Esase, Ahwereso and Mpatoam for supporting the police to effect the arrest.

The police indicated that a report was received that the robbers had attacked a mining site at Ahwereso on Sunday evening, amid following which there were sporadic gunshots between the robbers and some gold miners at the site, at about 10pm.

According to the police, the youth of the town caused an announcement through a public address system and organised themselves to support the police to undertake the hunt for the suspect.

Two of the robbers, the police said, were arrested in a thick bush by the youth at Ahwereso, while the police grabbed three but two others escaped.

ASP Asare would not give their names but appealed to the public to volunteer information for the arrest of the escapees.
