FIVE Paralympic athletes have been awarded for excelling in their respective disciplines on international and local platforms including the just ended Dan-deVan Paralympic sports festival held at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The athletes including Macclean Dzidzornu (two-time Outeniqua South Africa (OCC) gold medalist), Yakubu Abubakari (OCC bronze medalist), Ashiyetu Seidu (OCC women 42kg gold medalist), and Patrick Yaw Obeng (2015 All Africa Games double silver medalist) and Raphael Nkegbe (three-time Olympian) were presented with branded trophies and cash prizes.

In a speech read on behalf of the Minister of Youth and Sports (MoYS), Dr. Mustapha Ahmed by the Deputy Director of Sports, Mr. Ernest Kwakuyi, he lauded the Dan-deVan Group for the efforts to help develop Paralympic sports in the country.

“The sports festival will go a long way to promote and mobilise support to tackle and increase awareness on the existence of para sports in Ghana. We are grateful for the acknowledgements you have given to the athletes who won laurels at the festival as this will go a long way to motivate them to excel.”

He stated that sports helps people with disability to focus not only on their disability but on their ability in order to discover their talents.

Dr. Ahmed noted that the ministry is fully committed to partner Dan-deVan and any other company that would seek to promote sports, especially para sports.

At Friday’s ceremony held at the GNAT Hall, the Chairman of Dan-deVan Group of Companies, Mr. Daniel Mensah, expressed his appreciation to the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) for collaborating with him to stage the first ever para sports festival in the country.

He also noted that the presentation is a way of celebrating the sensational para athletes for their immense contribution in keeping the sport alive.

“Organisation of the maiden Paralympic sports festival forms part of Dan-deVan’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
