Five people who have been snatching vehicles from drivers at Amasaman in the Ga West Municipal Assembly and its environs, have been arrested by the police.
They are Dominic Fosu, 23, Simon Mensah, 25, Felix Ayisi, 23, Bismark Amofa, 37 and Jones Osei, 20.
Their modus operandi is to hire taxi cabs and on their way attack their victims with weapons, and collect the vehicles from them.
After the operation, they re-spray the taxi cab into a private vehicle and falsify document to enable them register the vehicle.
Four of such vehicles have so far been retrieved by the police.
The Deputy Commander of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Timothy Yoosa Bonga told journalists that on October 23 at about 11:40 p.m., three suspected robbers attempted to snatch a Toyota Echo Taxi cab with registration number GE 4026-15 from a driver at Amasaman Court Area.
He said Mensah was arrested and he led police to Kumasi and identified Amofa and Osei as the receivers.
The Commander said he also led the police to retrieve a Nissan Almera taxi cab which had been sprayed with fake registration number GN 6704-14 and another Toyota Corolla to be sprayed with the same fake number plate.
ACP Bonga said Osei admitted receiving the stolen cars from the suspect Simon Mensah, but indicated he sold the vehicles in Kumasi.
He said investigation were ongoing.
