4 Killed In Gas Explosion

fgFour people died and two others injured in an explosion at a house at Tema Community 12 during a processing of fabric products yesterday.

Three of the dead were identified as Nana Appiah Osabarimah II, Akyim Takyimanhene, 65, the landlord, shephered and Kofi, both workers.  The fourth person is yet to be identified.

Their bodies have been deposited at the Tema General Hospital mortuary.

The injured who are receiving treatment at the same hospital,l are Michael Oduro- Debrah, 24, who is the son of the landlord and Mr. Bernard Asa, 78, a relative.

The impact of the explosion was so intense that it tore part of the wall, ripped off the roof of the structure in which they were working and shattered the louvre blades and ceiling lamps of the five adjoining houses.

When The Ghanaian Times arrived at the scene at 1:07pm, several containers of chemicals suspected to be lacquer, phosphorous and matches labels were scattered around the compound.

The Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP Beatrice Zakpa Vib- Sanziri and the Homicide squad, personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and National Disaster Management Organisation were at the scene to gather information.

One of the inmates of the house who refused to identify himself, said at  12 noon, the workers were producing samples of batik when the landlord, a stroke patient who uses a wheel chair, insisted he should be pushed to the warehouse to see how the work was progressing.

According to him, he left the scene and entered the main house to go about his chores but moments later, the explosion occurred.

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Isaac Odamtten, and the Member of Parliament of Tema Central, Kofi Brako, visited the scene and later the injured at the hospital to console them.
