Four persons died in a horrific accident when a tipper truck crashed into a taxi cab at Anoff, near Adeiso, in the Eastern Region on Saturday.

The deceased, all males, who have been conveyed to the Nsawam Government Hospital mortuary, are Samuel Addo Kotei,32, the driver of the cab, Emmanuel Okoh,49, Stephen Ayikwei, 44 and Afrifa Boateng.

The four, who were on board a taxi with registration number GR 7277-09, were from a funeral at  Darman, a suburb of Nsawam, when the  tipper truck with registration number GN 7830-16 from Adeiso, crashed into the taxi.

The accident, which occurred at about 2:10p.m, resulted in a heavy traffic on the road, and personnel of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service rushed to the accident spot to ensure law and order, and to convey the bodies to the mortuary.

A large crowd was also at the scene to catch a glimpse of the bodies whilst others wailed uncomfortably.

Eye witnesses told the Ghanaian Times that the driver of the tipper truck ignored a signal by a police man at an Axelroad barrier at Anoff, to stop.

According to the eyewitnesses, the taxi cab driver, who saw the speeding truck, stopped for the truck to pass, but it veered of its lane and crashed into the cab killing the three persons on the spot whilst Afrifa Boateng, who was rushed to the Nsawam Government Hospital died on arrival.

The Officer in charge of the Accident Squad Unit of the Adeiso District Police Command Inspector Thomas Twumasi, confirmed the tragedy to the Ghanaian Times, stating that the driver’s mate (name withheld) had been arrested by the Police to assist in investigations.

He said the Police have also mounted a search for the arrest of the driver of the truck, who was on the run.

Insp. Twumasi said the case had been transferred to the Nsawam District Police Command, and the truck had been towed to the Nsawam Police station.
