37 Agogo SHS students nabbed for rioting

A total of 37 students of the Agogo Senior High School (SHS), in Ashanti region, were nabbed by the police for allegedly taking part in a riot at the campus, on Sunday night.

Konongo Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent (Chief Supt) Ohene Bossman, confirmed the arrest to the Ghanaian Time.

He said the suspects, 24 girls and 13 boys, who reportedly destroyed school property, would be screened and those found culpable prosecuted at a juvenile court.

Chief Supt Ohene Bossman said some of the suspects were handed over to the school’s authorities and others to their parents, pending screening and subsequent prosecution.

He said but for the timely intervention of the police at the school’s premises, the damage would have been extensive.

Chief Supt Bossman said wind screen of the school’s bus was smashed, and street lights on the campus, three air conditioners at offices and louver blades of classroom were destroyed.

Meanwhile, the School has been closed down indefinitely by the Ashanti Regional Directorate of Education, following the visit to the school by the Regional Education Director, Mary Owusu-Achiaw, on Monday.

The student’s anger stemmed from the fact the school’s authorities failed to resolve frequent interruption in electricity supply, which had led to lack of water supply as the water pumps were not functioning.
