32 Held For Lottery Fraud

The National Lottery Authority, in collaboration with the Western Regional Police Command, has arrested 32 persons in the Sekondi/Takoradi metropolis, for fraud.

A statement issued by the Authority on Sunday said the suspects contravened the National Lotto Act, Act 722 of 2006, which makes illegal lotto operation a criminal offence. Under the laws of Ghana, only the National Lottery Authority is mandated by law to run a lottery.

The 32, upon conviction, could either be fined, or given a custodian sentence, or both.

“We therefore wish to caution the general public that, any form of lottery, except authorised by the National Lottery Authority, is illegal. Those who stake illegal lotto, as well as the operators, face jail sentences, if convicted,” the statement warned, and added that the Authority is closely monitoring illegal lotto operators, as well as those who patronise it.

It also cautioned that landlords, who rent out their property for such illegal activities would have the property confiscated to the state and also fined.

It also appealed to the general public, to report any suspicious lottery activity to the nearest Police Station, or the National Lottery Authority.
