Thirty youths in Sankpala, a farming community in the Central Gonja District of the Northern Region, have been arrested for attempting to lynch a 60- year-old-woman on suspicion that she was a witch.
The Deputy Central Gonja District Police Commander, ASP Kwame Boadi, disclosed this to The Ghanaian Times in an interview yesterday.
He said on March 31, the people alleged that the woman (name withheld) was bewitching the young men in the community and therefore, attacked her, inflicting cutlass wounds on her.
ASP Boadi said the woman’s family took her to the clinic for treatment and brought her back to the community, but the youth again mobilised and launched another attack.
That, he said, forced the family members to report the matter to the Chief of Kusougu, who upon seeing the injuries sustained by the old woman, called in the police.
ASP Boadi said seven people were identified as the culprits and the police moved in to arrest them, but others tried to stop them.
The police consequently arrested 30 of them.
The 30 suspects are currently in custody at the Buipe police station while investigations continues.
