Erica Sosu, twin-sister of one of the deceased, however, survived the accident, which occurred near Gyankrom, Nsa-wam in the Eastern Region.
The deceased were Eric Sosu, 12, pupil of Jerisam Preparatory School; Naa Atwei, 14, and Nii Adjei, 11, siblings and pupils of Bishop Ato Junior High School, Nsawam.
They are said to have left home to swim, without the knowledge of their parents, only to meet their deaths.
The tragedy attracted a large crowd to the scene as search parties tried to retrieve the bodies from the river.
So far, only Naa Atwei’s body has been retrieved and conveyed to the Nsawam Government Hospital mortuary.
The Nsawam District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Akwasi Kankam-Boadu confirmed incident to The Ghanaian Times and disclosed that on April 12, the parents of Isaac Sosu and Kate Akosua, reported to the police that their children had drowned in the Densu.
Erica told the police that they left home around 2 p.m. after church service for the river to swim, when the incident occurred.
“I managed to hang on a tree trunk and called for help and a Samaritan came to my rescue “the Commander quoted Erica as telling the police.
Chief Supt. Kankam-Boadu further disclosed that search for the two remaining bodies is ongoing.
