3 suspected robbers arrested for robberies in Central Region

Three suspected armed robbers on the wanted list of the police have been arrested for their alleged involvement in series of robbery in the Central Region.

The three are said to have been terrorising residents of the Central Region for some time now, targeting stores and other business organisations.

One of the suspects, Kwame Afful, 25, a taxi driver was arrested in his hideout at Mankessim by the Mankessim Divisional Police Command

The rest are Yussif Ibrahim,35 and Abdul Musah, 33. Both drivers were arrested at Zenu and Amedeka respectively in Ashaiman in a joint operation organised by the Mankessim and Tema Divisional Poland Command on Friday dawn.

Briefing journalists at the Central Regional Police Headquarters, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Paul Awin explained that the suspected robbers last year attacked and carried out a break-in into the Rain Forest Hotel at Jukwa, in the Hemang Lower Denkyira and succeeded in stealing a 75-inch flat screen television set.

The crime, he said was captured on a CCTV where they were identified and the police started a search for them.

According to the police, on August 1, 2018, the group attempted to break into a warehouse of Larbi Brothers at Mankessim and in the process murdered the security man of the company.

Additionally, DCOP Awini stated that, on October 12, 2018, the group managed to rob a shop belonging to one Francis Quaye in Mankessim and succeeded in stealing 90  pieces of old batteries.

Giving further details to other criminal activities, the Regional Police Commander said that, on November 19, 2018, the suspects attacked and stole items at the Sunturk Supermarket at Kotokuraba, Cape Coast where they chiselled through the wall of the supermarket on a Sunday.

The suspects, he explained succeeded in stealing unspecified amount of money being sales made by the supermarket.

DCOP Awinifurther stated that the suspects were captured by CCTV footage, saying, “Image retrieved matched the images obtained by the police in similar robberies indicating that the crime was committed by the same gang of robbers”.

He also said that on November 27, 2018, the suspects again robbed Sunturk Supermarket at Mankessim, where they stole GH¢13,104 and 25 bags of rice.

In furtherance to the criminal activities, the Regional Police Commander said, the suspects  went to K.Nyame Enterprise last week and stole GH¢3,186 and a 43-inch NASCO television  and unknowing to them they were captured on CCTV mounted in the area.

He explained that upon intelligence and the help of informants, Kwame Afful was arrested by the police and a search in his room led to the retrieval of the pair of shorts, shirts and the shoes captured on the CCTV.

The arrest, DCOP Awini explained, led to the arrests of the two accomplices at Zenu and Atadeka in the Ashaiman municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

He cautioned that the Regional Police Command had intensified its operations and would arrest any individual who engages in any form of crime.
