3 fake drug peddlers arrested

The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested three persons, for allegedly peddling fake drugs.

They are Nuhu Sumaila, 45, Abdulai Iddrissu, 38, and Awiasu Aja, 45.

They were arrested in separate incidents at Poyentanga and Gindabour in the Wa West District and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Upper West and Northern regions, respectively, during a special joint operation by the Pharmacy Council of Ghana and the Police Service.

The exercise which also saw quantities of fake drugs seized from the suspects, according to the Upper West Regional Manager of the council, Mr. Michael Anim Ameyaw, formed part of measures to flush out illegal drug peddlers as well as rid the system of unregistered drugs.

He said activities of such fake drug dealers continued to pose a major health hazard to people, and everything would be done to curtail their activities in the system.

Mr. Ameyaw said the exercise would be replicated in other districts of the region to ensure that all such persons are driven out.

He said the council has a mandate to ensure that the health of every individual in the country is protected, and would therefore put in place the necessary checks to ensure that drugs that are consumed by the citizenry were wholesome and efficacious.

The Regional Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Daniel Kwantwi, said the three would be put before court after police investigations.

He said the police would continue to collaborate with other agencies to ensure that such unscrupulous elements are weeded out of the system.

Mr. Kwantwi therefore appealed to the public to co-operate with the authorities by providing information on such elements in the system, so that they could be apprehended.

Quantities of the fake products were also seized in the operations.
