3 electrocuted, 10 others injured at Akyem Asikam

At least three workers were on Sunday electrocuted while 10 others received electric shocks when a bill board they mounted fell on them after a high tension cable knocked it down.

The three, Kwadwo Wadasi, 25; Oboye Joshua, 20 and Agyei Taller, 40 were pronounced dead on arrival after they were rushed to the Kibi Government Hospital for treatment.

Five of the injured: Danso Emmanuel, 32; Charles Kofi Nyarko, 45; Stephen Namor, 33; Nana Yaw Ofori, 22; and Karikari Richard, 22 were treated and discharged.

The rest who are on admission and responding to treatment include Larbi Philip, 34; Asante George, 30; Ebenezer Addo, 30; Haruna Abdul Rahman, 23 and Isaac Owusu, 15.

The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh who confirmed this to the Ghanaian Times said, the Director of Jexfix International, an advertising and printing company based in Accra, Mr Jerry Jiriku, together with one Sampson Sefa, have been arrested for mounting the billboard which accidentally fell on a high tension cable causing harm to the workers.

He said the incident occurred on Sunday, at about 6:30 p.m.

DSP Tetteh said Sampson Sefa told the Kibi Police that he was mounting a giant billboard together with the workers for a yet to be built Platinum Vocational and Technical School, at Akyem Asikam when the incident occurred.

He said after successfully mounting the first one, they decided to mount a second and in the process it fell on a high tension cable which electrocuted some of the workers.

DSP Tetteh said the police arrested Mr Jiriku and Sefa to assist in investigations.
