2 Russians before court for kidnapping

Two Russians, accused of kidnapping two persons at East Legon, Accra, and keeping them hostage several months, have been granted GH¢500,000 bail with four sureties to be justified by an Accra circuit court.

The court ordered them to deposit their travel passports at the court’s registry.

Musa Musaev, a businessman and Rizakhan Suntasov, a driver, who allegedly kidnapped Ramasui Kafarov and Anen Kafarov, Managing Director and employee respectively of Geo-Professionals Services Limited, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime and kidnapping.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mawunyo Nanegbe told the court presided over by Mrs. Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku that accused held the victims hostage from August 8, 2017, at East Legon till April 2018.

He said on October 31, last year, while the victims were detained by the alleged kidnappers, Ramasui, one of the victims was compelled to execute a Power of Attorney to one Adam Edeibed to dispose of all his properties, comprising his business, six luxurious vehicles, and a jewelry shop.

DSP Nanegbe said accused and their accomplices held the victims at different locations, and subjected them to severe beatings, which resulted in injuries.

The court heard that accused committed the offence with other Russians, currently at large and were being sought by the police.

The accused and their accomplices, however, demanded $18 million before releasing the victims.

DSP Nanegbe said on April 20, this year, the victims escaped, sought refuge at the Russian Embassy and lodged a complaint with the police.

On July 17 this year, DSP Nanegbe said the police managed to arrest accused.

DSP Nanegbe asked the court not to grant bail to accused, because they would interfere with investigations.

Counsel for accused, Mr. Ralph Poku Edusei, however, urged the court to grant his clients bail, arguing that the facts did not support the charges against accused.

Hearing continues on August 29. – GNA
