2 Robbers Gunned Down At Forex Bureau

The Tema Police yesterday gunned down two suspected armed robbers during a robbery incident at the Mediator Zone Forex Bureau located near the International God’s Way Church at Tema Community 9.

One other robber, however, managed to escape with bullet wounds.

The Police said the bodies of the unidentified armed robbers had been deposited at the Police Hospital Morgue in Accra.

Two pump action guns and one locally manufactured pistol with 17 live ammunition were retrieved from the robbers.

Briefing newsmen yesterday about the incident, the Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri, said at about 8 am a caller informed the police that two middle-aged men wielding pump action guns had attacked the Mediator Zone Forex Bureau and held a messenger, Collins Sam, hostage.

She said Sam was injured in the process when the robbers fired at the inner glass door to gain access to the safe.

The robbers, then, demanded for the key from the messenger and when he declined, they fired at the safe twice, but it could not open.

Kingsley Andoh, a teller at the Forex Bureau, heard the noise and went out to see what was happening, but one of the robbers pointed his gun at him, but by sheer luck, he managed to escape and alerted some neighbours and later called the police.

DCOP Vib-Sanziri said a team of policemen from the Tema Regional Police Rapid Deployment Force, was immediately dispatched to the scene on receiving the distress call.

She said when they got there, the robbers were busily engaged in their operation but on seeing the police and sensing danger, they took to their heels amidst firing at the police and the crowd that had gathered at the scene, resulting in the injury of two civilians.

The police identified the wounded as Gladys Havor, 48, who was shot in the thigh, and Pius Gaglozu, 26, shot in the stomach after he had visited a nearby toilet.

The two were rushed to the Tema General Hospital where they are receiving medical treatment.

DCOP Vib-Sanzuri said the robbers while attempting to escape from the police, also snatched a red Pontiac Vibe Salon car with number GT 9964-11 and in the process damaged two other vehicles, but they were intercepted by the police.

“The robbers opened fire, prompting the police to return fire which resulted in the instant death of one of them while the other two tried to escape with gunshot wounds,” she said.

She said fortunately one of the fleeing robbers was arrested with the help of the public but he also died while being conveyed to the hospital, adding that the third one managed to escape with gunshot wounds.

She entreated medical facilities in and around the Tema metropolis to be on the lookout for patients who would report with gunshot wounds for medical attention and report them to the nearest police station for necessary action.

In a related development, a team from the Special Weapons and Tactic Unit of Tema Regional Police Command, arrested a suspect, Razak Shaibu, 23 at dawn yesterday at the Dawhenya Adotey Junction.

A search on him revealed $100 GH¢19, two torch lights, one mobile phone, a digital camera and a pair of scissors.

During interrogation the suspect admitted stealing the items from a nearby house and led police to the premises of his victims.

He was identified by the victims as the one who broke into their house to make away with the items.

DCOP Vib-Sanziri said Shaibu would be put before court after investigations were completed.

She congratulated the Police Visibility personnel at the motorway roundabout who relayed the information promptly to the information room and the men deployed to the robbery scene for their prompt action, the SWAT Patrol team for the arrest and thanked the members of the public who assisted the police to arrest the second robbery suspect.

She also entreated the public not to relent in providing information about criminal activities in the metropolis.
