2-month-old baby in jail with mother

A baby of about two months old is presently with its mother at the Nsawam Female Prison in the Eastern Region.

The inmate, who is said to be on remand, was seen with her baby wrapped with a piece of cloth during a prayer session organised by members of ‘Mina and Friends’, a youth group, who donated bales of used clothes and 110 bags of sachet water to the inmates last Sunday.

Indications are that the woman gave birth in prison, but the offence she might have committed, was not disclosed to this paper.

The group is, therefore, making a passionate appeal to the authorities to intervene for the sake of the innocent baby.

Speaking to the Ghanaian Times, Miss Wilhelmina G. Annan, leader of the group, and Mr Isaac Awuye, member, said, “We are worried to see a baby not more than two months in the midst of adults in prison:  it is our prayer that the authorities would do something about this sad situation.”

Receiving the items, Superintendent Helen Esi Gomado, second-in-command of the Nsawam Female Prison, thanked the group for the gesture, and said the donation would be used for its intended purpose.
