A total of 32 persons who sustained various injuries were currently receiving treatment at the UCC Hospital and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

A police source told the Ghanaian Times that the accident occurred about 1am yesterday when the driver of a Hyundai maxi bus with registration number GW 9656-17 with 33 passengers on board from Takoradi to Accra made a wrongful overtaking.

He said on reaching Cape Coast near the AmeenSangari Factory after the UCC East gate on the main highway, he allegedly overtook a leading vehicle just after a curve.

The bus, he explained in the process collided head-on with an oncoming Man Diesel container truck with registration number GR1553-15, which was loaded with frozen fish from Tema to Elmina.

The source further said, the driver of the truck, Nicholas Abakah with two other occupants together with the driver of the bus, Douglas Opoku as well as other occupants of the bus sustained various injuries and were rushed to the UCC hospital and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles got damaged and a portion of the load in the truck was destroyed.

The deceased were all occupants of the bus.

The bodies have been deposited at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary for identification and autopsy.
