Two policemen arrested in connection with murder and attempted robbery of a Ghana Commercial Bank bullion van in the Afram Plains on Monday, have escaped while being transferred from Donkorkrom to the Eastern Regional capital Koforidua, for further investigation.
They were with one other suspect being transported in a white Nissan pick-up vehicle.
The three suspects, Corporal Elvis Solomon Mensah (alias Fire), Lance Corporal Kissi Abrokwa and a motor mechanic known only as Danjuman were arrested by the Donkorkrom and Tease Divisional Police Command for murdering the driver of the bullion van and attempted robbery on Monday at Assisi Farms near Maame Krobo Junction in the Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region.
The body of the deceased had been deposited at the Donkorkrom Presbyterian Hospital, while the policeman wounded by the suspects in the robbery attempt, is also responding to treatment at the same hospital.
According to McJerry Osei Agyemang, a morning show host at Nkawkaw-based Life Fm radio station, who was an eye-witness said the incident happened when the police stopped to refuel the vehicle at the Nkawkaw Crown filling station on the Nkawkaw-Accra highway.
He said the two policemen who were handcuffed together, sought permission from the officer in charge to urinate.
Mr. Agyemang said the officer obliged, and asked one of his men to escort them, but a few metres away from the filling station, the suspects pushed the policeman and managed to escape.
As at the time of filing this story, all attempts by the Times to get the Eastern Regional Police Command to confirm their escape proved futile.
Earlier Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Yaw Nketia Yeboah, the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer, told The Ghanaian Times that the Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Peterkin Yentumi Gyenae had ordered the three suspects to be transferred to Koforidua.
ASP Yaw Nketia Yeboah said the incident occurred at 10:30 am when the two policemen stationed at Tease, opened fire on the GCB bullion van, with registration number GN 1354-15, at the Assisi Farms, near Maame Krobo Junction, killing the driver David Sarpong on the spot and injuring the policeman escorting the van Fredrick Adjei.
He said the police at Donkorkrom and Tease mounted a chase and arrested the two suspected policemen between Donkorkrom and Ekyeamanfrom.
He said the police retrieved two AK- 47 guns loaded with live ammunitions.
ASP Yaw Nketia added that the police later arrested the motor mechanic upon a tip-off.
