Two persons were yesterday jailed a total of seven months in hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court, for illegal possession of a sub-machine gun.
Morgbanja Moja, farmer, and Godsway Dangnam, a driver, both from Damanko in the Volta Region, pleaded guilty to possession of firearm.
Moja, was arrested by the police when he offered the weapon he bought from Damanko for sale at GH¢4,200.00.
Moja was sentenced to three months in prison and fined GH¢3,600.00 for unlawful possession of firearm, while Dangnam was jailed for four months and fined GH¢3,600.00 for transfer of firearm without lawful authority.
They will serve additional six months prison term in default of the fine.
Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, the trial judge, explained that their admission of the offence and the show of remorse had made the court to mitigate the punishment, and warned them against dabbling in illegal arms.
The prosecutor, Detective Chief Inspector Patrick Hanson told the court that the police received information at about 6:30 am on August 27, that Moja was selling an SMG rifle at Damanko.
When he was arrested, Moja mentioned Dangnam as the person who sold the gun to him at GH¢4,200.
The police arrested Dangnam at his hideout at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.
Mr. Tandoh ordered that the weapon be destroyed after four months.
