2 arrested over Bimbilla shooting

Police have arrested two persons in connection with the sporadic gunshots that claimed three lives and injured nine others at Bimbilla in the Nanumba District of the Northern Region.

The names of the suspects were given by the police as Abdulai Kassim and Wumbei Mohammed.

They were apprehended at the early hours of Saturday in the Bimbilla town.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mohammed Yussif Tanko, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) confirmed the arrest of the two to the Ghanaian Times in an interview in Tamale yesterday.

He said the suspects were in custody at the Northern Regional Police Headquarters in Tamale.

According to the police PRO, the two were alleged to have masterminded the shooting that occurred on Thursday night.

ASP Tanko stated that security had information that the suspects planned the attack and supported it.

The PRO added that two other persons who were alleged to have committed the barbaric act were on the run, and that the police are making efforts to apprehend them.

He named them as Alhassan Issah and Alhassan Hardi and appealed to the public to volunteer information about their whereabouts to the security agencies in order to effect their arrest.

ASP Tanko said security had been beefed up in Bimbilla and its surrounding communities following the shooting incident.

He said that special investigators and other security personnel have been dispatched there to carry out forensic examination and help ensure law and order.

Bimbilla has been experiencing intermittent sporadic gunshots due to protracted chieftaincy crisis, leading to deaths and injuries.
