2 arrested for posting nude pictures on internet

arrestTwo people, who allegedly posted nude pictures of 12 girls on the internet, have been arrested by the police at Legon, in Accra.
Desmond Appleton and Elvin Boakye, both university students, allegedly use the pictures to blackmail the girls for money and mobile phone credit.
Investigations following their arrest after the mother of one of their victims, a 14-year-old Junior High School (JHS) girl, reported the case, led to the discovery that 11 more girls have fallen victim to the activities of the suspects.
Appleton and Boakye, who are friends and students of a university (name withheld) in Accra, are currently on police enquiry bail.
Chief Superintendent Dr Gustav Herbert Yankson, Director of Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) confirmed the story to the Ghanaian Times in Accra.
He said that Boakye, a few months ago, visited the school of the victim to sell ‘T’ shirts after which he befriended the victim, and subsequently became “lovers,” and they communicated regularly on social media.
Chief Sup Yankson said in January this year, Boakye convinced the victim to send him nude videos and pictures of her, which she did.
He said after receiving the videos, he exchanged the nude picture with Appleton.
Chief Supt Yankson said in April, Appleton commenced a chat with the victim on social media, and demanded more videos or would leak the ones they already have.
He said the victim out of fear, obliged and sent ten additional pictures to Appleton.
“Appleton further demanded more pictures, but victim refused and ceased communication with him,” Chief Sup Yankson said.
He said Appleton later released the nude videos and pictures on the internet, when the girl failed to send him mobile phone credit, which he demanded.
Chief Sup Yankson said on July 17, the mother of the victim had a phone call from a teacher of the victim (name withheld), who informed her of leaked videos of her daughter on the internet.
He said a report was made to the police and when the victim was interviewed, she confirmed that the leaked videos were those Appleton had threatened to disseminate if she did not oblige to his requests.
Chief Supt Yankson said investigations led to the arrest of the suspects, who have been charged with publishing child pornography.
He said it had been established that 11 young girls have been victims to such criminal activity, and urged victims who have fallen victims to report to the unit for assistance.
He cautioned the public to desist from sharing nude pictures and videos with partners or people they meet on social media, to avoid being blackmailed.
