19 Lapaz residents fined for insanitary practice

The Abeka Sanitation and Motor District Magistrate court has convicted and fined 19 out of 21 people to a total of GH¢720.00 for dumping refuse at unauthorised places.

They could go to jail for six months in default.

The court, however, deferred judgment on two of the accused, Gafah Micahel and Alex Dankwah, to July 24, to make arrangement for a translator.

They both pleaded not guilty.

Those convicted are Tahiru Gariba, Gideon Kogbeva and Emmanuel Kwame Dompeh and Stanley Agbleke

Others are Kafui Ahiagba, Bro Sammy, Juliana Owusu, Alex Addo Ahuma Susana and Rejoice Apam.

The rest are Nana Osei Ofori Enock, Seidu Haruna, Desmond Gjan, Naa Yaale and Yasin Ramadan.

The court heard that accused are residents of Abeka Lapaz and its environs in the Okaikoi North Sub –metro of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

Presiding Magistrate, Mrs Victoria Ghansah, cautioned that those who flouted sanitation bye-laws would be punished, and advised the public to keep their environment clean.

Mrs Ghansah urged the AMA to ensure residents were registered under the polluter-pay policy.

In a related development, the Sub Metro Director for Okai-North, Mr. Angel Ketadjo noted that some unscrupulous people continue to dump refuse on the streets of Lapaz, along the N1 Highway late in the night.

He said the sub-metro formed a taskforce including the police to prevent the practice, adding that indiscriminate disposal of waste could lead to the outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases.
