15 illegal lotto operators grabbed in Sunyani

The suspected illegal lotto operatorsFifteen persons including a woman have been arrested by the police for allegedly operating illegal Lottery in Sunyani, in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The suspects, currently in police custody are Joyce Atiso, 24; Mark Ray, 38; Nicholas Marfo, 22; Dennis Kwasi Boakye, 45; Samuel Acquah, 52, Frank Appiah, 59, Kojo Frimpong, 45, Kwame Siano, 36, and Isaac Ankama Mensah, 27.

The rest are Isaac Adoma Kumi, 50; Atta Yeboah Senior, 41; Atta Yeboah Junior, 42; Justice Addo, 30; Joseph Kyere, 24, and Datus Manu.

They were arrested for operating a lotto marketing company without licence and selling of National Lottery coupons, in contravention of the National Lotto act 722 of 2006.

The National Lotto Act 722 states: “Only the National Lottery Authority is mandated by law to run a lottery. Any persons or groups operating illegal lotto activities commit a criminal offence.

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Commissioner of Police (COP) Prosper Kwame Agblor at a press conference yesterday said that the operation was undertaken by the police and the National Lotteries Authority to clamp down on those illegal activities.

He said on January 3, a team of police officers, led by Assistant Superintendent Isaac Okrah from the CID Headquarters undertook an operation in the Sunyani municipality to check the unlawful act.

The team arrested Kumi, Addo, Kyere Manu, Yeboah Senior and Yeboah Junior, who were distributing and selling coupons to those operating lotteries without licences at Sunyani-Rex.

COP Agblor said the other nine suspects were arrested at Sunyani Zongo, operating a lotto marketing company.

The police retrieved GH¢6,150, a mechanised lotto machine and quantity of assorted lotto coupons and recording books from them.

COP Agblor said the operation would continue until such miscreants are weeded out completely.

He disclosed that suspects would soon be put before court.
